AFTER THE DUST SETTLES...HIGGINS IS CHAMP!
In Newry, Maine, David Higgins snagged his second straight Rally America National Championship on VP's Rally Max . The rally hugged the Maine-New Hampshire border and featured nearly one hundred miles of gravel. The road was ridden in dust that proved to be a challenge for David Higgins and the Subaru Rally Team USA.
Along with his co-driver, Craig Drew, Higgins went into round five of six with an exceptional standing that would allow him to gain the championship with a sixth or better finish. This cushion wasn’t so comforting when Higgins and his race team found themselves slowed by dust and placed second on the start order. However, Higgins was able to coast his 2012 Subaru WRX STI to win five of the second day’s seven stages and finish with a very close second place. Higgins was just twenty-one seconds from Antoine L’Estage who was running Rally Max as well. It was apparent that the additional minute granted by Rally officials on the second day of competition was a huge boost for the Subaru Rally Team USA. L’Estage was fortunate enough to be first on the road and free of the dust that slowed Higgins.
This is the sixth overall win for the Subaru Rally Team USA and Higgin’s fourth championship in the U.S. "There's much to be proud of from our team's performance at this rally and on each previous Rally America round this season," said James Han, motorsports marketing manager for Subaru of America, Inc. "Frustrating as it may have been for both David and Craig to run behind Antoine and Nathalie in such dusty conditions, our drivers took the prudent approach within the context of our goal in retaining the championship title, and what a great job doing so at the penultimate round."
