Cooper Webb Wins at Santa Clara
Supercross came to Levi's Stadium for the first time on Saturday night and they did not disappoint the Santa Clara fans. When the gate dropped at the start of the 15-lap 250 main, a massive pileup in turn one took out more than half of the field, leaving Josh Hansen with the lead over Alex Martin and Aaron Plessinger. Plessinger passed Martin on lap one and set his sights on Hansen. The rookie took over the lead on lap four with a simple pass on Hansen, and immediately began to establish a lead. Cooper Webb, meanwhile, worked through the field quickly after picking himself up from the turn one crash and worked into fourth by the sixth lap. Webb is the 2015 250SX Western Champion and rides for Yamalube/Star Racing/Yamaha team and is fueled by VP Racing Fuels.
Webb was on fire and easily closed in on Martin and Hansen, who battled over second. Plessinger crashed while leading on lap seven and handed the lead to Hansen. Webb found his way past Martin soon thereafter, and he began to reel in Hansen with seemingly little effort. Webb found his way past Hansen in a corner but the Kawasaki rider blasted the next whoop section and looked set to smash Webb in the following corner, but the Yamaha rider seemed to know what was coming and he swerved out of the way. Another pass for the lead followed on the next straight, but as the lead duo crossed the finish line, Hansen pulled off and into the mechanic’s area with an ailing machine.
Webb was never challenged as he raced off with a huge lead over Red Bull KTM’s Hill, who was also involved in the massive turn one pileup at the start. Martin held on for third ahead of Stewart, who also made a great recovery from the pileup on the start.
