Pirelli World Challenge Excites at COTA
Pirelli World Challenge ushered in a new era with VP Racing Fuels as the official fuel for the series. The first round at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas saw all the series' classes in attendance and varying conditions all weekend. Great racing was seen in every class and VP kept the cars fueled throughout the event.
The exotics in the GT class didn't disappoint in Race 1. Olivier Beretta, of Monte Carlo, put his Ferrari 458 GT3 Italia in third place going into turn 1. Beretta followed Ryan Dalziel's Porsche until lap 21, when Beretta made a pass that would earn him the Cadillac ATS-V Move of the Race.
In GTA, Bryan Heitkotter, of Fresno, CA, in the No. 05 AE Replay XD Nissan GT Academy Nissan GT-R GT 3 started six on the grid and held the lead in GTA until the half way mark of the race when Michael Lewis, in the No. 41 EFFORT Racing Porsche 911 GT3R completed the pass for lead in class and held it for the remainder of the race. Frank Montecalvo, of Highlands, NJ, in the No. 66 DragonSpeed Bayshore Racing Mercedes-Benz AMG SLS GT3 finished third in GTA.
In GT Cup, Colin Thompson, in the No. 11 Kelly-Moss Motorsports Porsche of Bucks County/Penn Valley Constructors/Sherwin Williams Automotive Finishes/Austin Hatcher Foundation Porsche 911 GT Cup started on pole and led flag to flag for his first career win in the series.
Kevin Estre, of Lochau, Austria, in the No. 9 K-PAX Racing McLaren 650S GT3 took the Pirelli World Challenge Round No. 2 win in the wet on Sunday.
Michael Lewis grabbed his second win in GTA, and Colin Thompson won again in GT Cup.
The VP Racing Fuels Mustang in the TC class was driven to two top 10s by Ian Lacy. It was a great debut for the team, especially with Lacy coming in last minute to substitute for VP found Steve Burns, who suffered an injury and making him unable to drive.
The race from Circuit of the Americas will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network March 14 starting at 11am Eastern.
