The 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship is off to the most competitive start the series has ever witnessed. The final race of the “California Supercross tour” took place into San Diego, California last Saturday night.
As usual, San Diego didn’t disappoint and fans were treated to one of the best battles of the season between series points leader Ryan Villopoto and Chad Reed who both run VP Racing Fuels' AMA Supercross blend -- MR-PRO6. In the 20-lap Supercross main it looked like Villopoto had the race locked down until lapped traffic came into play.
“Villopoto races for it on every inch of the racetrack so I said to myself quit being lazy and get out there and fight for this thing,” said Reed.
Reed was able to weave his way through the slower riders more efficiently than his opponent and made spectacular pass through the whoops for the lead. Villopoto fought back and immediately upped the pace. And when Reed left him a foot or two of room in one of the 180-degree bowl turns, the Kawasaki man took full advantage barreling inside at full speed for the win.
“It was great to get my first win [in San Diego] and end Chad’s win streak at Qualcomm Stadium,” Villopoto said. “Hopefully I can start a streak of my own as we head to Cowboys Stadium this week."
After the first six rounds the series heads east this weekend toward Dallas. Ryan Villopoto will aim for his fourth win of the season. If there’s anything we’ve learned after the California tour, it’s that RV is dead-set on taking another title. Not only has the 23-year-old from Poulsbo, Washington proved the fastest, he’s also shown the most consistency with three wins, two podiums and another top-five finish.
